7 Super spices for super health

one teaspoon of ground cinnamon has the equivalent level of antioxidants as a half cup of blueberries and one cup of pomegranate juice. Just think of all the foods to which you add cinnamon!

Spices and herbs are botanically classified as fruits and vegetables. And since they no longer contain the water that makes up a significant part of the fresh produce, spices and herbs offer an even higher level of antioxidants. In addition, spices and herbs also are rich in phytonutrients, such as carotenoids, flavonoids and other phenolics, all of which possess health-promoting properties.

1Cinnamon

According to Dr. Bazilian, cinnamon is also rich in natural compounds called polyphenols. Research suggests that these compounds may act like insulin in our body to help regulate blood sugar levels.

2Oregano

Dr. Bazilian considers oregano a mini salad because "one teaspoon has as much antioxidant power as three cups of chopped broccoli (but don't ditch the broccoli – have both!)."

3Rosemary

The compounds in rosemary appear to help reduce inflammation in the body and inflammation is a trigger and indirect risk factor for many chronic diseases

4Turmeric

Researchers are looking into the role of turmeric in brain health and protecting against cognitive decline associated with aging. In addition, curry is a heart-healthy condiment.

Turmeric's antioxidants help protect your cells from free radical damage.*
The antioxidant content within turmeric comes from active compounds called curcuminoids.
These curcuminoids deliver antioxidants that may be:
  • 5 to 8 times stronger than vitamin E -- and also stronger than vitamin C
  • 3 times more powerful than grape seed or pine bark extract
  • Strong enough to scavenge the hydroxyl radical -- considered by many to be the most reactive of all oxidants*
If you are able to procure pure turmeric powder, you can use it in many ways to add glow to your skin.
  • Turmeric helps you reduce pigmentation on your face and even out your skin tone. It can be easily done at home. Mix a little turmeric with cucumber or lemon juice and apply to your face. Leave it for some time and wash off. A one-time application will be of little help and only regular use will give a soft glow to your face.
I use turmeric in a "tea" make of about 10 oz. milk (warmed in microwave) to about 1 tsp. turmeric, 1 tsp. honey (or other sweetener such as agave nectar), and top with a sprinkle of fresh ground pepper. It seems to work to alleviate osteoarthritis pain or discomfort.

Natalie Kling, a Los Angeles-based nutritionist, says she first learned about the benefits of turmeric while getting her degree from the Natural Healing Institute of Neuropathy. “As an anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antiseptic, it’s a very powerful plant,” she says.
Kling recommends it to clients for joint pain and says that when taken as a supplement, it helps quickly. She advises adding turmeric to food whenever possible and offers these easy tips. “Raw is best,” she said. “Sprinkling it on vegetables or mixing it into dressings is quick and effective.”

If you do cook it, make sure to use a small amount of healthy fat like healthy coconut oil to maximize flavor. Kling also recommends rubbing turmeric on meat and putting it into curries and soups.
You can also add one teaspoon of turmeric powder into a warm glass of milk and drink it before going to bed to prevent internal inflammation and infections.
Asthma
Since turmeric is an anti-inflammatory, it can help reduce the inflammation associated with asthma. Add 1 teaspoon of turmeric powder to a glass of warm milk, and drink this mixture as an effective asthma home remedy.

5Thyme

According to Dr. Bazilian, in addition to the antioxidant advantages, research is looking at the role of compounds in thyme in relation to respiratory function.

6Ginger

It may surprise you but one teaspoon of ginger has similar antioxidant levels as one cup of spinach. And ground ginger can be used in both sweet and savory dishes.

While ginger helps common illnesses, it’s positive effect on more serious health conditions can not be disregarded. For years, ginger has been known to provide relief when it comes to beating ovarian cancer. The University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center found out through their research that ginger can also destroy ovarian cancer cells. Aside from that, it also gives plenty of benefits for people who are suffering from colon cancer. The University studied how ginger could hinder the progression of colorectal cancer cells.

Ovarian Cancer TreatmentGinger may be powerful weapon in the treatment of ovarian cancer. A study conducted at the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center found that ginger powder induces cell death in all ovarian cancer cells to which it was applied.

7Dried Red Peppers

"Red pepper in its various forms is showing promise for enhancing metabolism, increasing satiety and potentially stimulating fat burning, too."

Prevents and Treats Blood Clots: Cayenne pepper also helps reduce atherosclerosis, encourages fibrinolytic activity and prevents the formation of blood clots, all of which can help reduce the chances of a heart attack or stroke.

Detox Support:Cayenne is a known circulatory stimulant. It also increases the pulse of our lymphatic and digestive rhythms. By heating the body, the natural process of detoxification is streamlined. Cayenne also causes us to sweat, another important process of detoxification. Combined with lemon juice and honey, cayenne tea is an excellent morning beverage for total body detox.

I pour down them a cup of cayenne tea (a teaspoon of cayenne in a cup of hot water, and within minutes they are up and around)." http://www.shirleys-wellness-cafe.com/cayenne.htm

Cayenne is a medicinal and nutritional herb. It is a very high source of Vitamins A and C, has the complete B complexes, and is very rich in organic calcium and potassium, which is one of the reasons it is good for the heart.

If a heart attack should occur, it is suggested that a teaspoon of extract be given every 15 minutes or a teaspoon of Cayenne in a glass of hot water be taken until the crisis has passed. Dr. Anderson also knew of a doctor who rushed out into the parking lot and put cayenne tincture into the mouth of a man who had died of a heart attack while he was parking his car. Within a few minutes, the man’s heart starting beating again. More about cayenne and heart attacks

If a hemorrhage occurs in the lungs, stomach, uterus or nose, it is suggested that a teaspoon of extract (or a teaspoon of cayenne powder in a cup of hot water) be given every 15 minutes until the crisis has passed. The bleeding should stop in 10-30 seconds. The reason for this is that rather than the blood pressure being centralized, it is equalized by the Cayenne, and the clotting action of the blood becomes more rapid. For external bleeding, take cayenne internally and pour cayenne directly on the wound.

I believe 4 studies have been cited demonstrating that cayenne destroys much prostate cancer. These studies stretch back to 2005. The dose is generally a teaspoon suspended in water, 3x daily. Swelling and inflammation occurs in prostate, but probably are necessary.

Possible Anti-Cancer AgenStudies done at the Loma Linda University in California found that cayenne pepper can prevent lung cancer in smokers. This may be again related to cayenne’s high quantity of capsaicin, a substance that can stop the formation of tobacco-induced lung tumors. Other studies have also shown a similar reaction in cayenne’s ability to inhibit liver tumors.

turmeric

garlic

cayenne

ginger

Consider eating turmeric, cinnamon, and cayenne pepper together. All three are powerful anti-inflammatories,and cinnamon may help reduce inflammation and aid with diabetic issues.

You probably know that antioxidants are important for your health.

I believe antioxidants are your body's #1 way to neutralize free radicals and help you potentially slow down the signs of normal aging.*

Oxidation by free radicals can damage cells and organs -- and thus impact your aging process* -- something I’m sure you’d rather put the brakes on.

Antioxidants are also key nutrients in:

  • Supporting your memory function*
  • Promoting your heart health*
  • Boosting your immune system
I'd like to add that my wife's cancer was resistant to chemotherapy until she started drinking a small carton of cranberry juice every day. There is research out there about cranberry aiding chemo kill ova cancer cells in a lab. I'm sensible enough to know that it's probably a co-incidence, but it just might not be. She still drinks it every day.

Castor Oil

12/24/2011: Linda from Toronto, Ontario replies: "I was just reading on www.castoroilhome.com,
"Castor oil primarily contains ricinoleic acid, a fatty acid component that is notable for its many healing benefits for the human body. Ricinoleic acid possesses the ability to draw toxins and other poisonous components out of the tissues, thereby restoring the health of parts of your body that have been infected.
Castor oil, a natural plant oil extracted from the castor bean seed, is said to pull out tumors from the body, according to American psychic Edgar Cayce. It is often recommended for the treatment of tumors near the surface.
Aside from reducing or dissolving tumors, castor oil is also regarded as a natural remedy for other swellings in the skin. It can be massaged on bunions, moles, warts, calluses, and cysts. There are also reports that uterine fibroid tumors and ovarian cysts that are benign or non-cancerous may also be addressed by castor oil.
They also said, don't use it on cancerous growths as it may aggravate the condition."

Dogs and cats with cancer need a diet that is high in quality protein, low in carbohydrates and rich in enzymes and Omega 3 fatty acids. However, depending upon the type of dog cancer, e.g. canine liver cancer and/or other complications such as canine kidney disease, a high protein diet may not be appropriate. Thus, a customized homemade diet for dogs is often required

http://www.ehow.com/about_6528553_canine-osteosarcoma-diet.html
The number-one rule of thumb of the diet, according to dogcancer.net, is to keep your dog away from grains. Dogs do not produce the enzymes necessary to digest grains. Also avoid any simple sugars as they feed on cancer cells.
The first ingredient on any commercial dog food should be any type of meat. Supplement commercial food with additional animal-protein sources, such as sardines, cottage cheese, eggs, hamburger or ground turkey. A supplement of fish oil such as Omega 3, 6 and 9 is important in fighting cancer. Herbaltreatment.com highly recommends a natural, holistic approach including protein, bones, eggs, greens, root vegetables, millet and linseed, garlic, wheat germ, cod liver oil, kelp and a limited amount of table scraps. The canine osteosarcoma diet will assist your dog's body to reverse the process of cancer as he heals.

However, commonly prescribed supplements for canine cancer include certain digestive enzymes as well as antioxidants. Antioxidants often used include vitamins C and E, selenium and green tea.

Another common dietary addition recommended for dogs with cancer is 1 tbsp. of organic flaxseed oil mixed with a half cup of cottage cheese. This is blended and fed to the dog three times per day for three months. Called the Budwig Diet, this mixture is believed to add lipoproteins to the body's cells, which in turn reduce the size of cancer tumors.

Holistic Medicines for Dogs With Cancer
Frequently a side effect of cancer is loss of appetite and subsequent loss of weight. The dog needs a high level of nutrition to maintain function and fight off the cancer. Essentially, the food needs to have the highest possible nutritional value per ounce. High quality proteins are vital. These come in the form of fish, chicken, beef and turkey. Raw or lightly cooked fresh meats are best. If the fresh approach is not chosen, seek out a quality commercial preparation. The food should have high protein content, with meat listed in the top ingredients. According to Bone Cancer Dogs, cancer cells need carbohydrates to grow. (See Ref. 3). Opt for a food that is low in simple carbohydrates, such as milk, fruit and sugar, and complex carbohydrates found in starchy vegetables. Adding digestive enzymes to the food can help to aid in digestion and retain the maximum nutrients of the food.

What I discovered is amazing and vast as far as alternative treatments go. Since the 1930s scientists have known that cancer cannot thrive in bodies that are alkaline rather than acidic. Most of us and our pets inhabit highly acidic bodies because of the foods we do and do not choose to eat. * * The first thing I did for my dog was get him off of his commercial food – even though it was a very good food you can only buy in the specialty pet stores – and I began to make his meals myself.

There are three supplemental treatments I am using beyond basic supplements. Each of the following are linked to order pages you may use if you like, but I am in no way affiliated with these brands or companies. Do your own research and find what resonates with you best. I am putting this out there to help make the research process easier for others, as I spent endless hours looking for all that I have found below:
Essiac Tea
Vitamin B-17
Carnivora
http://pathwithpaws.com/blog/2011/05/01/diets-for-cancer-in-cats-and-dogs-you-are-what-you-eat-a-fighting-cancer-machine/
Sample cancer diets
Dog (approximately for a 40 lb dog per day)
1 1/2 cups cooked or raw meat including liver and organ meat (if you use fish or pork make sure it is cooked)
1 cup cooked vegetables
1/4 cup yam, sweet potato or pumpkin, cooked or canned
1/8 cup nuts such as almonds, walnuts, or cashews
2 T yogurt with live cultures
1 egg
1 teaspoon Nordic Naturals Pet Cod Liver Oil
a calcium supplement (see below)
Cat (2-3 days of cat food for the average cat)
12 ounces of meat or fish ground or chopped(about 1-1/2 cup)
1/8 cup liver and organ meat (about one chicken liver)
1 egg
2 T pumpkin, sweet potato, or yam cooked or canned
1/2 teaspoon Nordic Naturals Pet Cod Liver Oil
1 teaspoon almond butter
taurine 250-500mg (if the meat is cooked or if using fish)
calcium (see below)
  • If possible I also recommend adding reishi, shitake, and/or maitake mushrooms to the diet. Mushrooms are strong immune stimulates and have anti-cancer properties. Add them in as some of the veggies. Mushrooms should always be cooked as the cooking releases their helpful properties and when they are not cooked they are mildly toxic.
  • When picking vegetables, broccoli and other leafy dark green vegetables should be considered. Many studies have been done on broccoli’s effects against cancer. See the article Broccoli Fights Cancer.
  • The pumpkin, sweet potato, yam, and cod liver oil are high in Vitamin A. Vitamin A promotes mechanisms in the body that kill cancer cells and cause cell differentiation. Consider adding other sources of vitamin A such as liver and carrots.
  • A calcium supplement needs to be added to any diet made for cats and dogs. There are many ways to do this.
    • There are many commercial products such as Animal Essentials Natural Seaweed Calcium.
    • Bone Meal Powder can also be used. Use one teaspoon for an average sized dog.
    • Many people prefer to add a Centrum Silver a day for average to large sized dogs.
    • If you are feeding a raw diet you can feed raw chicken necks for calcium.
    • If you are using eggs in your diet consider smashing up the egg shell and adding it to the diet. One egg shell provides enough calcium for an average sized dog. 1/8-1/4 of an eggshell provides enough for a cat.
  • If you are making raw food make sure the meat is frozen for at least 48 hours to kill off any dangerous parasites.
  • Nuts such as walnuts, almonds and cashews are high in trace nutrients, minerals, vitamins and good fats. If possible include these in your diet. Cats sometimes do better with a little almond butter. Avoid macadamia nuts which are toxic to dogs.

  • Also, I immediately STOPPED all deworming and vaccination program which are well known to cause toxin to build up and suppress the immune system in the long run (Read about the comments of vets who believe that vaccines are damaging our pets). Shasta had no need to be dewormed as she had no worms to begin with. She was emaciated, not because of worms, but because she was unable to digest the commercial pet food. learn why commercial pet food adversly affect your animal's health)

Dr. Donald Ogden DVM writes that commercial pet food (even the best known and most expensive brands) have had their nutrients altered, adulterated, devitalized and destroyed by heat, processing, coloring, preservatives and other chemicals. Feeding your animal such food on a regular basis causes waste-toxins to accumulate in the blood, lymphs and tissue which contributes to a weak immune system and renders our pet susceptible to chronic diseases.

    1. In their natural, RAW form, I puree a variety of organically grown vegetables in the food processor: (Definition of raw: uncooked, unheated, unprocessed, unadulterated - why raw? ). I have fed Shasta all sorts of raw vegetables: carrots, eggplants, tomatoes, avocados, lettuce, cabbage, beets, broccoli, cauliflower, etc.I also feed her the veggie's fiber/pulp that I save when I make vegetable juice and wheatgrass juice for my family. Raw vegetables are a very important source of vitamins and minerals as well as fiber. Merchants at our local weekly farmer's market know that I feed Shasta fresh produce and they often give me slightly damaged or overripe avocados, lettuce and other veggies which they would normally discard.

    Fasting
As Shasta became older, I began to fast her on water once a week or once every other week to help maintain her health. By age 6 or 7, as her metabolism slowed down, I began fasting her every other day but I have increased the size of her portions of food. By age 8, she would eat only once every other day. She seems to appreciate fasting and never ask or look for food during fasting days. If I had a sick animal, the first thing I do is stop feeding it for a few days. That is the first step toward helping the healing process. William Pollak D.V.M. says that occasional fasting by cats and dogs is a normal, natural phenomenon, especially when natural raw, fresh foods are fed. Occasional fasting by cats and dogs is a normal, natural phenomenon, especially when natural raw, fresh foods are fed. As long as your pet appears strong with good energy and clear responsiveness, self imposed fasting oftentimes ends by itself with a renewed gusto for life. The system requires periodic rest and purification and so it is taken naturally. Occasional fasting is natural in the cat and dog; it is the behavior of rest and purification. Cleaning the bowl of all the commercial food every day, day in and day out is unnatural and is the harbinger of most chronic disease seen in our pet population. When nutritional depletions have been satiated on the natural raw food diet, overeating does not take place. Overeating is a behavior encouraged by feeding commercial food, overeating does not occur in the natural setting. Overeating deprives the system of rest and purification, for in a nutritionally deficient state the body continues to crave; making the mind confused. The mind then can only satiate itself through the dullness of further overeating. This is not living; it is survival mode.

    Using curcumin properly
Heating turmeric powder in milk and coconut oil with a dash of black pepper will give you a healthy tonic that you can use daily to mollify chronic inflammation and help prevent cancer. This combination mimics traditional Indian cuisine and is necessary to get maximum absorption of turmeric's curcumin.

For more acute issues, high dose curcumin is also available in enteric coated capsules with piperine, the active ingredient of black pepper that enhances nutritional absorption.

Enteric coating keeps the capsules from breaking apart and exposing their fragile curcumin to stomach acids. This allows the curcumin to get into the small intestines and into the blood. If you Google bioperine (piperine) enteric coated curcumin, you'll find several suppliers.
